We are trying to find some fine versions of for example, Monotype Bembo, Plantin, just for setting plain text but the digital remakes (Linotype, Adobe) think lost the strength and beauty showed in the lead drawings. Adobe Minion and Caslon are very good but want to explore new things.

Or we would like to purchase new roman fonts. We have a splendid Verdigris but want another one. Trinite is not exactly the font we need; also, we got Lexicon but it has too much presence as its larger x height is not perfect for book settings. Any idea provided will be very fine.

I really like these recent digitizations of Old Style Antique No. 7: LL Catalogue from Lineto and Triptych from the Pyte Foundry (the bold grotesque is great too)

Haultin, or one of its related typefaces? Is the main criteria fidelity to the older forms?

Haultin sounds. Unfortunately F, Smeijer's page is not easy and could't found sheet specimens, but is not a problem to test it. The italic seems straigth without too many renaissance decorations.

And Ivan Louette has a Bembo (in the screen just a little light)  version that I must check.

Thanks for this information.

Some of my favorite digital versions of old classics:

  • FF Clifford – loosely based on type by Wilson of Scotland
  • Baskerville Neo – the best digital Baskerville because of optical sizes made for text
  • Martina Plantijn – newest interpretation of Plantin

Well, my pesimism is gradually converted in optimism.
I begin to see beautiful, pulchrous and invisible typefaces just for reading.
Akira Kobayashi is a very known figure (Zapf, etc) and Monotype...
Baskerville and Plantin are wellcome. Specially the last one. Adobe version is impossible.
Thanks again.
