This is Daily News Gothic, designed by Gerry Powell and cut at ATF for the New York Daily News in 1938. Besides the revival Kevin mentioned, there's a more direct one from HEX

I could have sworn that I checked Fonts in Use for Tabloid Press JNL, and didn’t find a link for related typefaces or a description that mentioned Daily News Gothic.

Or was it just updated?

Found a digital version under the name Tabloid Press JNL; still working on tracing the original source.
